Should you change your makeup with your hair colour?

We all have that one (or maybe more!) part of ourselves that just doesn’t inspire joy.  For me, it’s my hair.  Well actually, I should say it DIDN’T use to.  It does now!

If you know much about me, you’ll know that one of my main messages is that you are beautiful.  JUST THE WAY YOU ARE.  And it’s true.  But I also believe that colour brings joy, and being able to have that little bit of extra something in your life can make all the difference.

Which is why I love colouring my hair.

My hair is naturally a mousey-brown colour.  With not much “oomph” to it.  In other words, B-O-R-I-N-G.

I remember the first time I dyed my hair; it was a box dye from the supermarket and worked great!  I was still in high school so it couldn’t be anything too amazing as I had to still make sure I was following the uniform code.

It was a slightly richer brown that my natural colour; similar enough that if anything went wrong it wouldn’t be too noticeable.

My mum did it for me, and I remember afterwards being amazed at the difference it made!  That was the beginning of my hair colour journey, and yes, there’s been a mishap or two along the way, but now I relish my salon visits where I get to update and change my colour, even sometimes adventuring into the new.

Currently I have a mix of 4 colours – pink, purple, brown and blonde!  Here are some of my hair colour ‘iterations’ over the past few years!

There’s three things I’ve discovered in the process of colouring my hair.

1 – Your hair colour changes your complexion

You might have seen my post about skin tones and how different colours work for different people.  Well, the same principle applies to your hair.

I love the thought of rich, red-brown hair.  But the truth is, it completely washes me out.  However, the pink and purple tones really make my eyes shine.

The right colour will make you look amazing.  Your skin tone will even out, your eyes will sparkle, and any redness or blemishes can appear to fade away.

It really warms your face!

2 – You change your makeup with your hair colour

My makeup changes between when my hair is freshly coloured to when it’s time for a refresh.  I can sometimes even switch between warm and cool shades depending on what they are!

If you colour your hair or a looking at a change, be prepared to hold a separate set of makeup colours in you arsenal.

It might be just your lipstick that needs to be swapped out, or it might be a complete overhaul of foundation right though to your blush and mascara.

3 – Have fun with the process

My motto as always followed Dr Suess’ quote “Why fit in when you were born to stand out”.

Over the years I’ve become more confident in myself and have become more comfortable with people noticing me.  When people comment on my hair it’s usually with a sense of admiration and aspiration.  And that’s the best feeling in all of this; if I can inspire even 1 person to love themselves just a little bit more and give themselves a hair colour they truly love, then my job is done I say!

If you’ve got the opportunity to have a bit of fun with your hair, go for it I say!
