Skincare for Beginners

Skin.  The biggest organ of our body.  It protects everything inside it by holding it together.  And if it was laid out flat it would take up an area of 2 square metres!

The majority of our skin is covered with clothing every day, but our hands and face are exposed most of the time, which means they get the most exposure to the sun, the weather and the environment around us.

Personally, I like to interfere with my body’s natural processes as little as possible, but unfortunately, I can’t always control what my skin is exposed to, so I make sure I look after it in the best way possible.  And this includes a daily skincare routine using high-quality products that protect my skin from dirt, dust and other nasties, and rejuvenate it too.

It’s never too early or late to start looking after your skin, but if you’re just beginning your skincare journey it’s hard to know where to start.  Remember the age-old adage, K.I.S.S (Keep it Super Simple)?  Well, it can be applied to skincare too, so it doesn’t have to be overwhelming!

And with so many products on the market it’s hard to know which ones to choose.  Well, have no fear, I’ve got you covered.  Read on to find out the 4 most important principles of skincare, and which products I recommend to use.

Skincare Principle #1: Cleanse

Whether you wear makeup or not, it’s really important to cleanse your skin.  It’s optimal to do this twice daily, once in the morning after you wake up, and once at night after your skin has been exposed to dirt and other build up throughout your day.  However, if cleansing your skin twice a day is not realistic, start with once a day and build from there when you are ready.

If you also wear makeup, it’s important before cleansing to remove the makeup with a makeup remover that is not going to strip your skin of its essential oils at the same time.  I recommend the Senegence Melt-Away Cleansing Balm

as a great product for removing your makeup and leaving your skin feeling soft and smooth afterwards.

Even though we all do it, cleansing shouldn’t be done in the shower, because the heat can dry out your freshly cleansed skin and no one wants that!  So best practice is to cleanse your face before your shower with warm water and a soft, microfibre cloth.

When choosing a cleanser make sure it’s made specifically for your skin type (dry, normal to dry, normal to oily, or oily), because each one is formulated differently and using one that doesn’t suit your skin type can leave you feeling too dry or too oily and really defeats the purpose of using it in the first place.  I love Senegence’s cleansers – they are all 3-in-1, which means they cleanse, tone and exfoliate all at the same time, saving you time and money!

Skincare Principle #2: Moisturise

Just like a good foundation/base face leaves you with the perfect blank canvas to apply makeup to, a cleansed face leaves your skin as a blank canvas for the rest of your skincare.  Your skin’s exfoliated, and your pores are clear and ready for some extra moisture.

Since the surface of our skin is actually dead, it’s most important to look after your baby skin cells deep down at the bottom layer of your skin, and a good moisturiser will do that.

I highly recommend Climate Control,

first, one of Senegence’s best-selling products.  I like to call it a drink for your skin, because its job is to hydrate your skin right down to those baby cells, and your skin laps it up.

Using Climate Control in conjunction with a good moisturiser is best, because the molecules in the Climate Control attach themselves to the ones in the moisturiser, and drag them down with it to the bottom layer of your skin cells for extra moisture goodness!  Ou can use Climate Control twice a day after cleansing and before your moisturiser.

And since we’re talking about moisturiser, I recommend the Senegence Daytime and Nighttime moisturisers, because they are formulated according to skin types and they feel so good on your skin.

Skincare Principle #3: Protect

The third principle of skincare is to protect your skin.  There’s no way of knowing all the toxins, and dirt and grime that we come into contact with as we go about our day.  And since our face is exposed to all of that more than any other part of our body, it’s really important to protect your skin as part of your skincare routine.

We hear a lot about sunscreen and the importance of protection against the sun’s rays, but you might not have heard of some of these other ways of protecting our skin.

Vitamin C is an antioxidant, and a great way of protecting against Free Radicals, which cause inflammation and aging.  So a high-quality Vitamin C serum is an essential addition to your daily skincare routine, and I highly recommend Seneserum-C,

Skincare Principle #4: Nourish

Nourish is such a beautiful word.  It perfectly describes the LOVE we should feel and give to our skin, and it gives you those warm fuzzy feelings.  I think anyway!

There are many ways to nourish our skin outside of a daily moisturiser.  These are my favourites:

I use the Eye Serum every day, I love it that much!  It’s formulated specifically for the eye area, and it helps to improve the look of dark circles, eye bags, wrinkles and puffiness on the eye’s delicate skin.  It’s even ophthalmologist tested and it’s safe for contact lense wearers.

The Anti-Wrinkle Serum helps to fight signs of aging, like around the eyes, the mouth and the forehead.  It’s specifically formulated to target the small areas, so you only need a tiny amount each time.

This Renewal Serum is a great addition to your nighttime routine and helps your skin to feel rejuvenated and firmer-looking over time.  It includes Aloe Vera, and Meadowfarm Seed Oil for hydration and calming benefits to the skin.

These 4 principles are the basis to a great skincare routine, and should be included no matter your skin type.  If you are unsure of your skin type or you want to know more about how to best look after your particular skin type, you can grab my FREE Skin Type Quiz, and together we’ll have you feeling great in the best skin of your life!
